Natural Fiber
This division was formed in 1946 to process the unique fiber surrounding the pecan meats. Pecan shell provides a clean, natural fiber resource to make numerous products with beneficial properties, and that are safe for employees in a manufacturing setting. We think of “Natural†as a material that has no additives or chemical processes altering the physical state or leaving residues. Processing at our facility involves only size reduction.
The resource of pecan shell fiber comes from a natural protective system. While on the tree, the nuts are inside a green husk which protects from any airborne contaminants. Any contaminants in the ground are removed as they must pass through the entire filter system of the tree fiber. This results in Pecan Shell Fiber and Pecan meats that are pure uncontaminated resources. In a pecan cracking plant, the pecan shell receives water washing, a 190 degree hot water wash and subsequent drying after separation from the pecan meats. This result is a clean fiber resource for our various products.
The fiber can be ground into many products ranging from a coarse grind to a very fine particulate made up of individual cells. It is the uniqueness is in the basic cell design that makes the product beneficial. Most fibers are long and thin; however, Pecan Shell is made up of rounded oval shaped cells called sclereids. This type of particle shape is very free flowing and allows ease of dispersion when mixed with other ingredients. Another key property is the low ash content which results in a non-abrasive fiber.
Staff and Contacts
A key to the success at Southeastern Reduction has been effective leadership. In the over 65 years of manufacturing, there have been only 4 managers; this has led to a strong focus and consistent direction towards partnering with end users with products that meet their needs and exceed their expectations.
John Nizio, Vice President
- Joined Southeastern Reduction in 1984 after receiving a Master’s degree in Wood Technology. John is the fourth consecutive generation in his family involved in grinding natural products since the mid 1800’s.
